RSPB visitors

Today we were fortunate to have visitors from the RSPB and BirdLife Malta. They initially came to see and listen to a presentation  with Mrs. Glare's 'Bird Club'. The children in the club explained the work they had completed for their Wildlife Explorer's Bronze Award. The visitors then worked on a project  'Nature at Home 'with class 3. We used maps we had drawn of the school grounds to plot habitats we had created for our wildlife. We had informative discussions about wildlife in Malta and ideas about how we could improve our grounds in the future. Mr Winter will try to put a few photographs about our exciting afternoon in the year 3 area this evening. Our visitors were very impressed by the children's knowledge, enthusiasm and behaviour. It would be lovely to hear the children's comments on the blog.

When the RSPB came to visit us, we were given a sheet that had different animal habitats and different coloured shapes by the side of them. Along with that there was a sheet of stickers that had the shapes on them. When we saw an animal habitat that was listed we put the correct sticker next to it. Each sticker was worth a different number of points. At the end when I counted mine up and I totalled with 439!

Yesterday we was lucky enough to get a visit from RSPB. It was wonderful. We looked at how we could make our school a better nature home. We only needed a beetle bucket and a compost heap. Also I heard the most amazing thing, the rarest mammal in the UK is the water vole. The RSPB people said that we are the cleverest school they have ever met and taught. One of the ladies said that we are the friendliest nature home they have ever seen.

I really enjoyed the afternoon with the RSPB and visitors from Malta and Spain. Our activity was to look for wildlife habitats and see what colour and shape stickers they were. The information was on provided lists with stickers which we had to stick on maps that we had created beforehand in class. We did it in pairs. I remember working with Emilia; I was looking out for habitats and telling Emilia which stickers to put where, and she put the stickers I told her in the places I told her. Then we asked the RSPB and visitors questions. I had 14 questions but only had the chance to ask if grass snakes were wildlife.

When the RSPB came to visit they taught us a bit about wildlife. We took our maps outside what we had made and the lady gave us some sheets. Whatever we found that was on the sheet we had to take a sticker of and put it on our maps. Each sticker was worth a different number of points. We had to work together in pairs. In the secret garden there wasn’t a bat house or a beetle bucket. After we went back into the classroom and Lucy said that our school was one of the wildlife school that she has ever been to. When we was in the classroom we asked some questions what we wrote.

When the RSPB visitors came round to Moor Hall School they told us all about wildlife and giving nature a home we learnt new facts about birds and other animals that are in the wild. Everybody was very friendly to the animals that we saw. We asked questions to the visitors about the wildlife around us, how they communicate and the animal’s habitats.

I enjoyed working with the RSPB visitors. I told them what we had learnt at bird club. We got to know what their names where. There was also a surprisingly visit from a person from Spain. I do not know how many People there were in total. But I was very excited when the people from Malta first came to our school! The Spanish person was from Malta but was born in Spain. I have a great big thank you for the people who came from Malta and also a great thank you for the people from the RSPB. Which I learnt stands for: The Royal Society for the protection of birds. The RSPB people said we only need one more thing to make are school garden more animal friendly and that one thing was a bat box. I really enjoyed when they came to visit and they thought we were very clever too. They gave us some clip boards with two pieces of paper attached to them, one was a sticker sheet and the other was a sheet with everything a school needs to be more animal friendly. One of the ladies told us that she saw the only snake in the UK the other day (a grass snake). They found it by putting 3 cold black mats on the floor because snakes have cold blood and the sun was shining that day, under the last mat there was about six grass snakes.

Some people from RSPB headquarters, Spain and Malta came to our school to look around and to meet the children. We looked at the different habitats for wildlife around our school grounds. The only thing we needed to get was a bat box. Lucy, from the RSPB said our school was very wildlife friendly. We asked lots of questions about nature and there were some answers that I already knew. The bird club did a presentation for the people about their work. A Spanish lady was holding a snail and showed us the hole underneath the shell on the bottom where they breathe. I really enjoyed it.
