Well what an afternoon we have had here in KS1!!  We had lots of fun at our party.  I have uploaded some photographs to the Year 2 section of the website ... As you can probably tell some of the children got their hands on the camera towards the end of the disco and took a few cheeky selfies! :)

Year 3, 4, 5 & 6 Choir Arrangements for the Mitchell Centre

Dear Parent / Guardian,

Our first ‘gig’ for the Year 3, 4, 5 & 6 choir is fast approaching; Saturday 12th December 2015… TOMORROW!!! I have to say I am really excited. Thank you for your support because, at the end of the day, without you transporting your children to and from an array of venues, opportunities like this simply aren’t possible; thank you.

Saturday 12th December 2015 – The Mitchell Centre Sutton Coldfield

Children can wear Christmas jumpers and if possible a Christmas hat! (Please do not buy them – I have a few we can loan). If your child uses an inhaler, please be sure to bring their medication from home. We will not be taking the inhalers from school. Please could you also ensure that your child has been to the toilet before they meet us. We will be unable to take children to the public toilets.

Mr Watts and I will meet the children at 12:45pm at the centre. Please park in the main car park and walk through the covered walkway towards the Hungry Horse. If the weather is wet, we will meet under the covered walkway, if not, in the open. One thing is certain it will be chilly, so please wrap up warm; hats, scarves and gloves.

Please do not leave your child unattended, keeping your child safe is the priority given that it is such a busy time of year for shoppers. Please ensure that Mr Watts or Mrs Collins has acknowledged receiving your child. Could we please also request that you do not leave the Mitchell Centre. We are responsible for your child when they are singing, but ultimately the visit can only take place if parental responsibility, whilst visiting the Mitchell Centre, is acknowledged.

We will be singing from 13:00 to 13:45/14:00 (we could be repeating some songs!), so enjoy wandering around the shops or having a coffee, as we entertain both yourselves and shoppers whilst raising money for the Birmingham Crisis Centre.

See you all on Saturday.

Falconry Display

Children who are working towards their RSPB Gold Wildlife Explorer's Awards had fun attending a falconry display in the school hall in their 'Bird Club' time. Children who already have the gold award and the RSPB Climate Award also attended.

We saw a variety of birds flying: owls including a beautiful Spectacled Owl, a kestrel and a majestic Harris Hawk. The Golden Eagle was large and grand but a little nervous, however the Little Owl was cocky and very noisy! The talk was interesting and informative and we learnt lots of new facts about raptors and owls.

The event was a fitting treat for all the children's hard work and perseverance in gaining these awards.

Moorhens Paper Chain Race

Moorhens children had their annual Christmas paper chain race this afternoon. There were two teams of 12 either side. The children had to race against time to get the longest paper chain they could. There was a lot of shouting and excitement, but in the end the team with an impressive  60 links long won. Each child received a small gift for all their hard work. Well done to all the children who took part.

School Council in action

The children in Year 5 requested more skipping ropes to use at lunchtime. Mrs Hanlon has bought the ropes and now all the children on the school council are going back to their classes to discuss how to use the new equipment safely and fairly. The children were also concerned that everyone should use the trim trail and gym sensibly so they are going to talk about that with the classes too.

The year 6 children told their school councillors that they wanted new white boards to write on in class for maths and literacy. When the School Council met the other children agreed. After finding out his much they would cost  Ellen and Ben wrote a letter to the PA  requesting some money to spend on enough white boards for everyone in school.
The PA agreed to the request and now Miss Jones is in the process of ordering the equipment.

Mr Winter would like to say well done to the School Council . Keep up the good work and your enthusiasm.

Class 2 Update

What a tiring day here in Class 2 ... The children competed in an Inter-House Cross Country competition today where they had to run 3 laps of the field!!  I was tired just watching them.  All children worked really hard and definitely worked up a sweat.  The winning team will be announced tomorrow in our Star Writer's Assembly.   This afternoon children have been doing some follow up work after our trip to Cadbury World.  In literacy on Monday children wrote recounts of our day so in our computing session today children used these to create a recount with photographs on the Ipads.  I have uploaded both photographs and children's work onto our section of the website.

Space Station tonight Tuesday

The NASA space station is orbiting the earth all the time. It  passed over the UK at 7.16 and 8.51 yesterday. I've seen it up in the sky. It is a very bright white light moving very fast.
It will come around again at 7.59 tonight (Tuesday) so if you are still up have a look out of the window to see if you can see it.
The space station is 150 miles above the earth and has 7 scientists working in it! Why don't you give them a wave?

National Poetry Day

To celebrate National Poetry Day  the children in Class 3 have been reading the poem When Daddy Fell into the Pond by Alfred Noyse. It has made us all laugh.
We will be turning the poem into prose tomorrow, This means we will be writing in sentences using adjectives and noun phrases to make our work interesting.

On Friday we will be performing the poem to each other.

First Golden Rule Sticker achieved in Class 2!

Today, Sophia received the first sticker for our golden plates.  Sophia has received a sticker for our golden rule 'Do be polite' as she ALWAYS uses her manners with teachers and children.  A wonderful example to the rest of the class.  Good girl Sophia ... 6 stickers to go until that special reward! :)

Class Three are using persuasive language...

This week the children have been discussing the statement 'Football should be banned at school'. Everyone has taken a  character with a different point of view.  We have 'teachers', 'caretakers',' head teachers',' parents', 'children', 'football coaches'  and even a 'couch potato'.

Tomorrow we are going to have a debate in the classroom where we can each argue our point of view.

The children in Class Three have worked hard and enjoyed their literacy work this week.
Well done.

Class 2 eBooks

After quite a few sessions of Computing, Class 2 finished their eBooks about the History of Cadbury today.  Children have been working really hard in pairs to produce their books.  Children used the internet and our class timeline to find out information for themselves and then searched, saved and uploaded  pictures, text and background colours to create their books.  We have some budding non-fiction writers here in Class 2!  I have uploaded a few examples of the children's books into 'Useful documents for parents of Class 2' on the school website. Please take a few minutes to have a look at the children's hard work! (They are PDF files so couldn't be added to the 'Children's Work' section).

We made the models look like they were using a force.

Everyone enjoyed the challenge!

Class 3 Figure Me Out

Yesterday in our maths lesson we each created a 'Figure Me Out' poster. We used calculations to show facts about ourselves.

The work is on display in our classroom.

To celebrate the Queen’s long reign, your first homework in Year 3 is to use calculations to make a ‘Figure Me Out’ poster that tells us all about her.

Look on our class page to find out more.

Hello from Class 2!

We are having a great first week back here in Year 2.  The children are working very hard and trying their best!  Today we voted on our new class councilors for school council.  Please check the Class 2 page to find out who we chose .... !

Queen Elizabeth

Yesterday, in assembly, Mrs Menmuir was explaining that Queen Elizabeth has been on the throne for 63 years.
She set us a challenge to find out how many Prime Ministers the Queen had worked with.
This morning Isabelle told  Class 3 Three that there had been 12 Prime Ministers.

Moorhens Arts & Crafts

Moorhens were given 2 large boxes and decided to create a house and a car. The children were so eager to play in the house, so they quickly painted the window and door.

The car was the second box to be painted. Even parents joined in when they came to collect their children.

As soon as they were both dry, the children couldn't wait to play in them.

Luckily, both the house and car have survived during the  last few weeks, considering the children have constantly played with them both nearly every day.

Moorhens Road Safety Competition

Congratulations to Sadie yr 5, Lucy yr 4, Connie yr 3, Frankie and Lily yr 2 for winning the road safety competition.

Children had to work in mixed age groups to create an advertisement including a slogan for road safety.

The children decided to do PowerPoint presentations and their work was shown in front of the whole school. Each child in school then voted for their favourite group.

Due to all their hard work, all children who entered received a prize.

Well done to all the children who took part!

The 'Wildlife Explorers Club' go on a 'Forest Experience'.

Children in the 'Wildlife Explorers Club' were 'environmentally friendly' today as they walked instead of using transport to an exciting 'forest experience' event.

We made 'God's eyes' out of wood and wool which we found hidden in the forest, then we made dens and finally drank hot chocolate.

You can see by our photographs what a wonderful nature filled time we had.

KS1 Sports day

What a great morning we had here in KS1 today!  All the children tried their very best and we had a brilliant morning.  I have uploaded a selection of photographs from the morning to our class page on the website.

Leopard Slug

After the 'Bird Sale' we all went into the 'Wildlife Garden' to fill up the feeders and check the bird baths. We found an unusual slug which was identified as a 'Leopard Slug'. Scientists are unclear of their whereabouts and to date there have been no reported sightings in this area. I have therefore registered our sighting to the Open Air Laboratories Network run by Imperial College, London. These slugs are garden friendly as they eat rotting vegetation and other slugs - they don't eat healthy plants!

Bird Club Sale

The 'Wildlife Explorer's Club' (though we call ourselves the 'Bird Club') are now working towards their RSPB Silver Award. Part of this award is to 'raise funds for wildlife'.

The children have been working hard making items to sell and today was the sale. They raised over £200 and have several ideas how they want to spend the money: ideas include a bat box, an owl box, a donation to the RSPB and BirdLife Malta and stones for the wildlife garden! A special thank you to Mrs Edwards and Cara's Nan for their contributions. Well done to you all, you should all be very proud.

Radishes

Today we harvested our very first home grown garden produce! Ren pulled up four juicy radishes. Come back later for photographic evidence!

RSPB visitors

Today we were fortunate to have visitors from the RSPB and BirdLife Malta. They initially came to see and listen to a presentation  with Mrs. Glare's 'Bird Club'. The children in the club explained the work they had completed for their Wildlife Explorer's Bronze Award. The visitors then worked on a project  'Nature at Home 'with class 3. We used maps we had drawn of the school grounds to plot habitats we had created for our wildlife. We had informative discussions about wildlife in Malta and ideas about how we could improve our grounds in the future. Mr Winter will try to put a few photographs about our exciting afternoon in the year 3 area this evening. Our visitors were very impressed by the children's knowledge, enthusiasm and behaviour. It would be lovely to hear the children's comments on the blog.

Moorhens Road Safety Competition

Moorhens Road Safety Competition.

This competition is open to Moorhens club children only.

We would like children to work in mixed age groups at Moorhens to create an advert including a slogan for road safety. Each team will have access to an I-pad. They can sing, act, dance or use puppets to make their advertisement.
Children then need to design a poster
Think about whom you will be working with. You will need a camera operator, director, actors, a script writer and poster designer.
All advertisements will be shown to the whole school, who will then vote for which advert they like the best.
The winners of the competition will be announced in assembly within the last week of the summer term and a prize will be awarded to each child in the winning team.
All children who take part will receive a certificate.

Competition entries must be handed in by Wednesday 8th July.

Good Luck!

@ParentMaths  I found this Twitter account and thought it might be interesting for parents and friends of the children to look at and follow.   I think their website is 'under construction' but it looks as if it might have some useful ideas to help your children with their maths .

Walk to School Competition

CONGRATULATIONS to class 2 who won the walk to school week competition. They have had an extra break this afternoon.

We will be monitoring the number of children who will be walking to school next week and at the end of the week the class with the most stickers will earn an extra breaktime.

Walking to school is not only healthy but it reduces the amount of congestion outside of our school gate, making it much safer for all. If you can't walk all of the way to school then please consider  parking and walking for a short distance.

Class 5 Mock Election

Due to the 2015 General Election, children in class 5 spent some time discussing and furthering their knowledge of politics. We discussed what voting is and how it works and then we spoke about the different political parties. Children were then given some time to research the different parties to gain an understanding of which party they would be most inclined to vote for. In the classroom we then set up a polling station, children were issued with their own poll card and Mrs Russell and Mrs Parsons acted as Poll Clerks. Children put their votes into a ballot box. Hopefully this activity has helped us to gain a better understanding of the process and the importance of an election.

Year 4 and 5 trip to West Midlands Safari Park

Year 5, along with Year 4, enjoyed a fantastic day out at West Midlands Safari Park as part of our current science topic about animals. In the coach we went on a safari to see a wide variety of amazing animals such as: rhinos, white tigers, wild dogs, elephants and lions. We had a Park Ranger on board to tell us all about the different species. After lunch we went on a walk through the spooky bat caves (where bats flew freely), fed the colourful lorikeets (some children even had them land on their heads!) and walked through the aquarium and creepy crawlies! Some of use were fortunate enough to feed the penguins, they loved gobbling up the fish! Later on in the afternoon we listened to a reptile talk and ventured through the reptile house. After an ice lolly break we had a classroom session with a park ranger about the classification of animals, we got to touch cockroaches, a hermit crab, a corn snake and even a skunk! Despite a bit of drizzle we went on a walk through lemur woods and fed cabbage to some very hungry hippos! To end the day we went on a dino trail where we saw huge robotic replicas of incredible dinosaurs! What a terrific time had by all! A big thank to all the staff who accompanied the children: Mrs Collins, Mrs Russell, Mrs Newbould, Mrs Latino-Kelly, Mrs Barton and Mrs Brandon-Pike.
