From the beginning of January, Moorhens children started making hot air balloons to hang up within Moorhens room. As they were not allowed to cover balloons with paper mache, due to allergies, they used 4 sides of 4 basketballs instead.
The children covered the basketballs in Vaseline first, then added cling film to stop the
paper mache from sticking to the basketballs. The paper mache was then smothered over the top with glue and news paper and then left to dry. A few days and layers later, the paper mache was hard enough to be removed.
Even after putting on all the Vaseline and cling film, the paper mache had stuck to the basketballs, so we had to deflate each ball, before adding the top paper.
Baskets were made out of cardboard and paper was weaved in and out to get a basket effect.
Parts were divided off so that each section could have a different colour.
Netting was used to cover the balloon and to help hold everything up when the balloon was put in place.
Children tried their hand at finger knitting. This was for the rope to hold up the basket
The children then made peg people to go into the balloons which have fancy outfits, hats and bags.
The balloons are now finished. Its been a lot of hard work by the children, but they finally got there in the end.
